Jo and her Migraines

Can An Osteopath Help With Migraines? Jo’s Jorney:

Jo had experienced migraines since her adolescence, and they returned in her late 40s. Her GP and previous osteopath noted that her family history and hormonal changes increased her likelihood of suffering from migraines.

While the prescribed medication helped if taken at the first sign of an attack, Jo often woke up with a migraine, leaving her helpless. It was her GP who suggested seeking the opinion of our practice for further assistance.

Understanding Jo’s Condition

Jo’s spinal curves naturally tended to be stiff at the top of her back, causing her neck to work harder to achieve movement. Additionally, Jo had a forward-chin posture when sitting, which further strained her neck muscles as they worked to hold her head upright. During our assessment, we found mild wear and tear at the top of her neck, along with several trigger points within the muscles. These trigger points, areas of tight muscles, caused pain elsewhere—in Jo’s case, over her right eye.

Osteopathic Treatment for Migraines

Over three sessions, we focused on improving Jo’s joint movement and reducing muscle tightness. Her trigger points decreased significantly, leading to a reduction in pain. We continued to see Jo at monthly intervals for three months to maintain her tissue health and empower her to manage her condition independently. As a result, Jo’s symptoms became less intense, and while she still experienced migraines, they were less frequent and more responsive to painkillers.

How Osteopathy Helps with Migraines

Osteopathy offers a holistic approach to managing migraines by addressing the underlying musculoskeletal issues that may contribute to head pain. Through personalized treatment plans, including manual therapy and postural advice, osteopathy can help alleviate symptoms and improve overall well-being.

Benefits of Seeking Osteopath Help with Migraines

  • Reduced Frequency and Intensity: By addressing muscular and postural issues, osteopathy can help reduce the frequency and severity of migraines.
  • Improved Responsiveness to Treatment: Osteopathic care can enhance the effectiveness of other treatments, such as medication.
  • Empowerment and Control: Regular osteopathic sessions can help patients understand and manage their condition, providing a sense of control over their health.
